Long-standing Flintshire Councillor Ray Hughes sadly passed away on Saturday at the age of 88.
Councillor Hughes was a highly respected member of the Council, known for his dedication to public service and commitment to his community of Leeswood.
He held various roles on the Council since he was elected in 2008 and was proud to serve as Chairman in 2015 with his late wife Gwenda as his Consort. Prior to serving on Flintshire County Council, he was a Delyn Borough councillor from 1990-1996 and had been a member of Leeswood Community Council for more than 50 years.
Outside of Council life, Councillor Hughes served as a school governor at Ysgol Derwenfa County Primary in Leeswood and Castell Alun High School, Hope. He was also a member of several fundraising committees and groups, including manager of a local football team, a youth leader, secretary of the Racing Pigeon Club, Chairman of the Leeswood Carnival Association and President of the Leeswood Allotment Association.
Council Leader Dave Hughes said:
“Councillor Hughes was a true champion for his community in Leeswood. He cared deeply about local people and worked hard to make a difference. Beyond his work as a councillor, he was a much-loved father and grandfather and dedicated his time to charities and groups to benefit the local community.”
“Councillor Hughes will be missed by all of his colleagues and friends at Flintshire County Council, and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.”
As a mark of respect to Councillor Hughes, the flags outside Ty Dewi Sant were flown at half-mast.
