Building project begins at Blacon High School

Work starts this week to build a new teaching block to increase the capacity at Blacon High School.

The new two-storey building, funded by Cheshire West and Chester Council and the school, is being built by education specialist Pave Aways next to the existing school. It will include provision to support students with special education needs, a dining area and workshop on the ground floor along with six new classrooms on the first floor.

Car parking will be extended on site to provide additional parking spaces including one further accessible parking space. More cycling spaces will also be installed to encourage pupils to get active and cycle to and from school.  

In order to provide sufficient accommodation for the pupils for start of the autumn term temporary mobile accommodation has been installed on site.

The site will be operating in line with the Government’s COVID-19 guidelines to keep students, school staff, the local community and the construction team safe while building work takes place. 

Headteacher Rachel Hudson said: “We are delighted that work is starting. As we start a new term the need for this space is testament to the growing success and popularity of the school and the belief in our values by the local community. 

“This project will enable us to meet the demand for places within the primary schools in the Blacon Educational Village, supporting us to achieve the best outcomes for students in a high-quality learning environment. Our bespoke area for students with additional needs will provide a flexible learning space to support our students.” 

Councillor Bob Cernik, Cabinet Member for Children and Families, Cheshire West and Chester Council said: “This is excellent news for the High School. As the number of pupils increase the new building will allow the school to continue to offer smaller classes which will be of great benefit to the students.”
