Cheshire Fire and Rescue service issue warning over hoverboards

The popular children's toys are being blamed for causing a series of fires.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue are warning residents to be wary after a fire involving the popular childs toy.

Firefighters attended an incident at a home in the county on Thursday last week which had been started by a hoverboard.

A 72 year-old woman was treated at the scene by paramedics, and the toy caused extensive damage to the house.

Now the service is issuing safety advice on Hoverboards including always checking it comes froma  reputable source, carries the British safety mark on it.

Advice for owners includes never leaving the hoverboard charging unattended as they have been known to overheat and to charge it in a garage on a concrete floor if possible.

Station Manager Colin Heyes said:

"The lithium ion batteries used in hoverboards and other rechargeable items contain chemicals which are flammable. In the event of a short circuit or an over-charge situation they can heat up very quickly and burst into flames. The resulting fire, although relatively small, can be very intense and produce dense smoke."
